As a general flame-retardant material, flame-retardant abs material has a wide range of applications, including: electronic and electrical enclosures, instrumentation, auto parts, switch panels, sockets, etc. The ABS material itself is a non-flame-retardant plastic. It is necessary to add modifiers, including flame retardants and other flame-retardant materials, to make the ABS material reach the flame-retardant V0 or even 5VA level.

The oxygen index of ABS resin is between 18.8% and 20.2%. It is a flammable material and emits a large amount of toxic gas and black smoke. Here are several modification methods to improve the flame retardant properties of ABS resin:

Add small molecule flame retardants, which include organic and inorganic flame retardants. Organic flame retardants include halogen compounds, phosphorus and nitrogen flame retardant compounds, etc., and inorganic flame retardants include aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and two oxides. Antimony etc.

1. Halogen compounds are added to ABS resin as flame retardants. The main mechanism of this modification method is: when burning, the flame retardant decomposes into halogen-containing gas, such as HCL, etc. The gas is on the one hand the chain of active free radicals. The formula reaction, on the other hand, isolates the oxygen in the air, so as to achieve the purpose of preventing combustion. According to the current research, the flame retardant effect is the best when the addition amount of halogen flame retardant is about 10% to 20%. However, this method is prone to produce halogen-containing toxic gases, so more halogen-free flame retardant materials are currently being studied.

2. Phosphorus nitrogen compounds are added as flame retardants to ABS resin. The main mechanism of this modification method is: when phosphorus nitrogen compounds burn at high temperature, they decompose into phosphorus-containing polymers to form a carbonized film on the surface of the burning material. Insulate the oxygen in the air. In addition, the flame retardant will absorb a lot of heat when burned, reducing the temperature of the material, thereby achieving a flame retardant effect. At present, the appropriate amount of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds is generally between 12% and 20%, and the amount of addition needs to be adjusted for different proportions, so as to achieve better flame retardant effects and lower costs.

3. Inorganic compounds are used as flame retardants. The main flame retardant mechanism of this modification method is: the burning of inorganic flame retardants is to form a protective film on the surface of the material to isolate oxygen, and in addition, it will absorb a lot of heat during combustion, and It will produce water vapor to dilute the oxygen in the air, and through the above comprehensive effects, the flame retardant effect can be achieved. At present, inorganic flame retardants are the most environmentally friendly flame retardants, but because they are inorganic materials, they will reduce the physical properties of the materials, and the flame retardants are more expensive. The current addition amount is generally between 10% and 20%, and the addition amount of different inorganic flame retardants needs to be adjusted according to the formula.

It forms a new alloy material with other flame-retardant materials or flame-retardant materials to achieve flame-retardant effect. At present, there are many alloy flame-retardant materials based on ABS resin, such as PVC/ASB alloy, PC/ABS alloy and so on.

Another method is to use the combination of the above two methods to add both flame retardant materials and part of flame retardants to prepare flame retardant materials with better flame retardant properties and better physical properties. Jinlida's new flame-retardant ABS material is prepared by this method. This material not only has a significantly lower material cost, but also has excellent flame-retardant performance, up to UL94-5VA. In addition, the material has high impact performance and good toughness.

The last method is to graft flame-retardant groups on ABS resin to achieve the flame-retardant effect. The advantage of this method is that the impact on physical properties is low and the flame-retardant effect is better. However, the disadvantage is that the current research is more Less, less mature products, and high material cost, suitable for high-end occasions that are not sensitive to price.
